Which Road ?
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I;
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
This well know poem was passed to me recently by someone wishing to encourage and help inspire my ambitions to travel the world next year on my motorbike.
But as I re-read it, over and over, I saw some ambiguity...
Is it just me, but this poem used to encourage people to take the 'Hard Road' doesn't really inspire... Why the 'Sigh'? Was the difference good or bad? How do we know? Aren't the roads both 'equal'?
Just a thought.... :o)

Good thinking, Wilson, the point being precisely that whichever roads we take in life, we leave others untrod and can't often, if ever, truly evaluate our choices - the glass-half-full brigade don't look back and sigh, the glass-half-empty among us more likely so. Both/all may be equally valid, whether less trodden or not: who says you have to go with the crowd or not (if you do, I'm snookered after those 100 top albums, that's for sure, but no sighs or regrets in my well spent listening youth!)
